It's crazy to think that I haven't been doing cheer my whole life because of how much my life revolves around it. From 1st grade to 8th grade, I competed in gymnastics but got too burnt out to continue it in high school. I decided to try out for the high school cheer team my freshman year and made varsity as a freshman because of the tumbling I got from gymnastics.
I was really scared to transition over but I'm so happy I did! It was a bit difficult during my senior year of high school because of the amount of times I got injured. I told myself that after my senior year of high school, I would never step foot back. on a cheer mat for my own safety. I was already at the IHSA sports concussion limit and had multiple other injuries including ankle sprains, wrist sprains, etc. My love for competing kept me going and once our high school made it to state, everyone started asking me if I was going to continue cheering in college. my go-to answer was no, but I couldn't help looking at their Instagram page and how fun it looked.
After a lot of internal battles if I wanted to cheer in college or not, I decided that I could always quit if I didn't like it. I went to tryouts and immediately loved it. it was different because the team was very difficult to get on, so everyone there was passionate about what they were doing. I didn't fall and hit the ground once because they actually knew how to catch. the coach was so nice too so I tried my best at tryouts and hoped for the best! I made the team and I am so happy to be a college cheerleader.
